Taperlock System for Couplings and V-belt Pulleys – Rugged Power Transmission for Everyday Industrial Use

Anyone working in mechanical engineering, material handling, or maintenance encounters it every day: the Taperlock system. For decades, it has been one of the most important standard components in industrial power transmission. Whether in fans, pumps, conveyor belts, compressors, or mixing systems—anywhere torque needs to be reliably transmitted from a shaft to a drive element, the Taperlock system has established itself. Today, it is one of the most widely used shaft-hub connections in general mechanical engineering worldwide.

It is particularly common in combination with standardized V-belt drives and flexible couplings. HRC couplings with Taperlock mounts are standard in many industrial systems. These torsionally flexible couplings compensate for certain misalignments and dampen vibrations in the drive train. At MOLL-MOTOR, numerous Taperlock tension sleeves, V-belt pulleys and coupling components are available from stock at short notice. This enables quick response times for repairs, downtime or spare part requirements.

What is a Taperlock bushing?

The Taperlock bushing is a conical clamping element used to connect shafts and hubs. It is typically used in conjunction with V-belt pulleys, couplings, sprockets, fan wheels and gears. Technically, it is a tapered clamping bushing with a slotted design and a keyway. By tightening several screws, the bushing pulls into the tapered hub, creating a positive-lock connection between the shaft and the driven element.

Why the Taperlock system has become established worldwide

The principle seems obvious today, but it was originally a major advance over traditional shaft-hub connections with individually machined bores. The industrial adoption of the system began in the 20th century with the increasing standardisation of mechanical engineering. The goal was to make drive components easier to replace and faster to install.

Advantages:

  • Modularity: A single V-belt pulley or a single coupling, can be used with different sleeves for various shaft diameters.
  • Quick installation: Installation is usually done without special tools. The bushing is simply inserted into the hub and secured with screws.
  • High flexibility: Thanks to standardised sizes, different shaft diameters can be combined with the same pulley.
  • Excellent availability: Every hour of downtime counts, especially in maintenance. Companies like MOLL-MOTOR keep thousands of compatible components in stock and ready for immediate delivery.
